COVID-19 has hampered the accessibility of education for children with special needs. This project looks after the school fees and development of the children.

Description

Education as a whole has been deeply affected by the pandemic. Its consequences have been widespread, hampering access to education for all children. In the case of children with special needs, accessibility of education is crucial. Their learning and development are entirely dependent on schools that provide for their needs. Zep Rehabilitation Centre has been working with special children for many years. Its sustenance and working have been dependent on the school fees. Distance learning for special children not only requires more effort but also constant support through therapy.

Economic inability at homes to pay the school fees of children has brought about the main challenge of sustenance of the school and services it has provided to children over the years. Parents' salaries have been cut to half of what they used to be and education has gotten severely impacted by the same. This has brought about extreme impediments in the development process of the children. Furthermore, due to a lack of resources, consistency in therapy also reduces significantly.

With this project, Zep Rehabilitation Trust aims to bring the best of care and education to the children keeping in mind the impact of COVID-19 across sectors. The inability of paying fees should not become an obstacle for a child to receive a formal and conscious education. COVID-19 has brought many backlogs in the routine and consistency of developmentally delayed children. Through the project, Zep will be able to cover for 100 students for the time till the next session begins. These students will be then put in for therapy which has been deterred due to the inconsistency that has come about since the lockdown began in March.

With regard to the workings of the centre, through the funds, the operations that go into running the school will be put back in place. Furthermore, teachers will be paid who have been working without pay since the lockdown.

Problem Statement

Special Education, unlike mainstream education, requires the ecosystem of education to work for children with special needs. Due to COVID-19 this ecosystem has been ruptured in a way that 100 children in Zep Rehabilitation have had to bear the brunt of the ongoing pandemic. The process of education for them involves measures set in place specifically for their development which stands compromised given the lack of monetary support to keep running the schools.

Project Goal

This project will accomplish these additional goals

Bringing the routine and consistency back for special children.

The primary goal of the project is to bring the routine back to the development process of children who depend greatly on the sessions in school. COVID-19's incoming has brought challenges in maintaining consistency which forms the crucial support for children who are developmentally delayed. Trained professionals will then be looking into working with the children keeping in mind the pandemic's safety measures. ?

Compensating teachers and professionals who run the school.

Since the lockdown, teachers have been working without salaries to keep up with the needs of the children and complying with the safety measures to be taken in the pandemic. This project will not only help the children but compensate the professionals for the work that they've been doing/will do. Furthermore, this will ensure a consistent salary to employees, who, then, can safeguard their livelihood which has been impacted by the pandemic.

Fee waiver for children to continue education.

As mentioned in the project description, children come from various socio-economic backgrounds and most families have seen a major cut in their salaries since the lockdown. The fee waiver through the project will ensure that the children get the care and attention consistently without having to drop out. The immediate effect of salary cuts is seen in education, as per many studies. This fee waiver will give the families enough bandwidth to let the children stay in schools after which the role of the centre plays a primary role.

Since there was no school for special children in Pimpri-Chinchwad area, to provide these children and their family sufficiency, education and treatment, Zep took an initiative. It is a Centre where children are provided with education & training through different media of instructions i.e. Therapy (Sensory, Vision, Music and Dance, Gestures & sign languages.)
