Providing Education to Children with Intellectual Disability

Providing education for abandoned children with intellectual disabilities by hiring qualified special educators to offer special education training for our children with teaching aids

Description

The children at Sri Arunodayam live with cognitive, emotional, and physical disabilities and our special educators work across all age groups.

Special educators play a crucial role in their lives. Their primary responsibility is to provide support and education to children with intellectual disabilities to help them reach their full potential and lead fulfilling lives.

We have 15 boys in pre-primary and 14 boys in primary class. Our three special education teachers will teach 10 boys each, the ratio 1:10 as specified.

Since inception in 2002, about 170 children with intellectual disabilities have benefitted from the presence of special educators. It has been our experience that when special educators begin teaching the children during the pre-primary stage, we have seen good progress in terms of social integration as the children grow older.

The cost of child welfare + medical expenses are approximately Rs. 5100 per month per child.

Our special educators provide individualized instruction that is tailored to the specific needs of each child. This involves assessing the child's strengths and weaknesses, identifying their learning style, and developing an instructional plan that meets their unique needs.

They work with intellectually disabled children to develop important life skills, such as communication, self-care, socialization, and problem-solving. These skills are essential for the child's independence and ability to navigate the world around them.

Many intellectually disabled children struggle with emotional and behavioral challenges. Special educators provide support in these areas, helping children to develop coping strategies, manage their emotions, and build positive relationships..

Sustainable Development Goals

Sri Arunodayam Charitable trust
Sri Arunodayam as a home for abandoned children with intellectual disability (ID) came into existence on account of the despicable practices of families who abandon their vulnerable children due to ignorance, poverty, social stigma, and a general lack of moral conscience that has never been justly disciplined through a strict moral code that safeguards our country’s most vulnerable citizens. Sri Arunodayam was registered as a public charitable trust in 2002, and was later recognized as a Reception Unit by the State Government of Tamil Nadu in 2008 for outstanding work with abandoned children with ID. Children were and continue to be found in public places such as hospitals, bus and railway stations, and even in dustbins. Child Welfare Committees, the Police and India's ChildLine are the conduits through which they are brought to Sri Arunodayam where they are nurtured, restored to health and rehabilitated according to their abilities. We currently have 110 children residing at our home.
